Creative Londoners
Location Portrait Photography in London, by Michael Wayne Plant
Creative Londoners is an ongoing series of location portraits created for the online magazine creativelondoners.com. Each portrait accompanies an in-depth interview with a London based creative musicians, filmmakers, photographers and other artists building their careers in the city.
These are environmental portraits made on location, using available light. Every subject selects a place in London that holds personal or professional significance. The location becomes part of the narrative, grounding the portrait in the spaces where creative lives are actually lived and worked.
As a London portrait photographer, I approach each session intuitively. I arrive at the chosen location, assess the light, background and work quickly to find a strong visual angle. Using natural light and minimal equipment, allows the portrait to remain responsive to the environment rather than staged or over-produced.
Most sessions are completed within thirty minutes. This pace keeps the energy fresh and collaborative. The unpredictability of each setting the shifting light, weather, space (private or public), and architecture makes every photo session different. Working this way keeps the portraits direct and honest, rooted in the atmosphere of contemporary London.
Creative Londoners is ultimately a portrait of the city itself, seen through the people shaping its cultural life.
