Looking for an old post; On imaging software.
Today I went looking for an old post, I am convinced I wrote and posted on my use of software sometime over the past two years. As I have changed my workflow and I know I did write a long post on leaving the Adobe camp for imaging editing. I wrote about the fact I did not like the subscription model and that I had decided that it was time to look elsewhere for alternative software. I described my process of choicing and experimenting with a range of imagine software and what I had decided I would do.
However, I can’t find the article I wrote so I am going to have to redo it as I thought it was an interesting process that I went though.
To give you a heads up I partly changed and decided on using Photo Mechanic for image ingestation and library functions. As I create almost exclusively raw images, I need a solid robust raw processor, for this I choose, DxoLabs PhotoLab now on version 6. And for image retouching and I choose Affinity Photo now on version 2. As I am still a lecturer at Morley College I still have access to Adobe Creative Suite and Photoshop. I have found it hard to leave Photoshop as I am so familiar with using it as I have so many years experience using the program and that level of familiarity is hard to leave. Especially when one has to learn a new retouching program while admittedly similar still has its differences. So for now while I am still learning Affinity Photo, I keep reverting to Photoshop primary because it is so familiar to me.
I did for a while revert to an old friend of Capture One Pro, however I have found their upgrade policy and pricing to be both confusing and expensive for what is a very good Raw Image processor and following there recent email about changing their pricing policy I am glad that I decided not to go that route, even though I was tempted.
One thing that I needed in a raw convertor was for it to do what I want in my own way, I don’t want overcooked images. I also really do need the software to support a wide range of cameras. In part because of my years being a Sony Global Imaging Ambassador, I have used rather a lot of different cameras since I got my first digital camera a Nikon D70 in 2004.
