Sony a7r Camera and Lecia Summicron 40mm f2 Lens

AuthorPostedbyMichael Wayne Plant

Sony a7r Camera and Lecia Summicron 40mm f2 Lens Combination.

I have been use a Sony a7r Camera for a while now and have take to using a Lecia Summicron 40mm f2 Lens on it for when I want a small light lens. This lens is about 40 years old and was originally made for the Minolta CL or Leica CLE camera. It is a bit difficult to use on the Leica M (type 240, M9 or M8) as it does not have frame marking to be able to accurately, however on the a7r this is not a problem as you are seeing though the lens via the electronic finder. The lens is stopped down to the taking aperture which is not a  problem on an Electronic Finder Camera.

I have discovered that when I process the files in Lightroom and apply the Sony 35mm f2.8 lens profile to the raw files it removes a little vignetting, that I did not see prior to applying the lens correction, but once I tried it, I now realise that this lens defiantly exhibits vignetting and befits from using the Sony 35mm lens profile. Which also shows that the Sony 35mm f2.8 lens must also vignette as well as this is the correction that I am applying to the files form the camera. The lens is nice and sharp, when I get the focus correct. Which, because the lens is stopped down, when I am using it, I have to be careful with it as it often shows a bit to much focus peaking in the viewfinder. This is normally not a problem on the Sony lens but becomes more noticeable when using the Lecia lens on the camera.

I like that I can use the lens for pre-setting my focusing distance and Zone focusing, unlike the Sony lens as they have fly by wire focusing.

Manual focusing for accuracy needs to be set differently as the camera does not stop down to the widest aperture for manual focusing without setting the camera up

Top level menu: Camera icon /2/Focus Mode/MF – sets manual Focus

Top level menu: Cog wheel/2/Live view display/ Setting effect off – sets shutter release stop down.

(I will make screen shoots when I get the correct HDMI cable).
